The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Executive Director Peter Jennings says the rapid withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan was an “absolute folly” on the part of President Joe Biden.
“And almost Joe Biden alone,” Mr Jennings added.
“To conclude that the smart thing to do, after 20 years of military operations in Afghanistan was simply to race out of the country as quickly as they could.”
Mr Jennings added the better approach would have been to keep a small amount of soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan, which would have “enabled the Afghan military” and given confidence to the Afghan government.
“A much more sensible approach, and one frankly that we should have followed – were it not for an emotional reaction on the part of Joe Biden.”
