Cheer Season 2: Everything We Know About the Netflix Docuseries

Surprise! The hit Netflix documentary series is B-A-C-K! Yep, Cheer season 2 is happening, and soon.

The first season dropped in early 2020 and became an immediate hit, with viewers captivated by the dedicated young cheerleaders of Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, and their tough, beloved Monica Aldama. As the squad prepared for the national championships, which they were heavily favored to win, physical injuries and personal demons threatened individual athletes’ spots on the team and the group’s chances overall. It was riveting; even Simone Biles was a fan!

While Cheer was a massive success story for Netflix, it was unclear if the series would be issued a second season after fan-favorite Jerry Harris was arrested on one charge of production of child pornography. He was also accused of “soliciting pornographic videos and images of minors and soliciting sex from a 13-year-old victim at cheerleading competitions,” per the Chicago Tribune (read all about the charges against Harris here). Harris plead not guilty in December 2020.

On Tuesday, December 28, Netflix announced that Cheer would not only return but would address the accusations against the show’s former star. Here’s everything we know about Cheer season 2:

When does the new season drop?

All nine episodes will be available on Netflix on January 12.

Who from the first season is coming back?

Coach Aldama, Lexi Brumback, Gabi Butler, La’Darius Marshall, and Morgan Simianer are all returning.

When was it filmed?

Per Variety, the filmmakers originally began making a season about Navarro’s arch-rivals at Trinity Valley in January 2020, but the production – and the cheer season – were both scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic. Filming resumed in September 2020.

How do they handle the Jerry Harris scandal?

Per Variety, there will be an episode focused on the allegations against Harris, in which “the brothers who first came forward about Harris are interviewed.” The docu-series also shows the case’s effect on Harris’ former teammates, and apparently it all goes down in episode 5.
