There are calls for a broader approach to combatting mental health in Australian children amid increasingly concerning statistics around the psychological distress in teenagers.
National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds says COVID comes on the back of a “decade or more” of deteriorating mental health but these issues have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
“It’s not just COVID, but I guess what we saw during COVID with the school closures and in the lockdown states, is such serious deterioration that we can’t look away now,” Ms Hollonds told Sky News Australia.
“We have to do something to understand better, what are the drivers of these mental health concerns for children and young people?
“So COVID really shone a very harsh light on this.”
