Evidence of ‘trendy’ plate tectonics relationship to 2.5 billion years in the past present in China

A singular rock formation in China holds clues that tectonic plates subducted, or went beneath different plates, through the Archean eon (4 billion to 2.5 billion years in the past), simply as they do these days, a brand new research finds. 

This 2.5 billion-year-old rock, often called eclogite, is uncommon, forming when oceanic crust is pushed deep into the mantle (the layer between the crust and the core) at comparatively low temperatures. This kind of high-pressure, low-temperature rock is “largely confined to subduction zones on the present Earth,” research co-lead researchers Timothy Kusky and Lu Wang, Earth scientists on the China University of Geosciences, advised Live Science in an e mail.
