Kaling, who is producing and co-writing the highly anticipated third installment of Legally Blonde, recently told Extra that it’s in the 22-year-old’s hands. “Listen, I think I can do anything, and if that’s something she wanted to do, what a joy to have her in that,” Kaling said in a new interview.
Considering we’ll be picking up with Elle Woods (Witherspoon) at 40 years old, this could be the perfect opportunity for Ava to take on the role of her mom’s on-screen daughter. “I can’t wait to see what people will think of the way we wrote Elle Woods,” Kaling told Access Hollywood back in January 2021. “We wrote Elle Woods at 40, so how Elle is at 40 versus how she was at 21 has been really fun to imagine.”
Of course, if they do go that route, Ava would not be the first Witherspoon child that Mindy Kaling has worked with. The OG Legally Blonde star’s 18-year-old son Deacon Phillippe just made his acting debut in the third season of Kaling’s Netflix series Never Have I Ever. “I had heard Reese say that Deacon was interested in performing and he is,” Kaling told Extra.
“He’s so funny, so talented. He’s obviously, like, very handsome, and we had a great time with him on set, and he is like his mom where after he wrapped, he sent me a handwritten note, thanking me for being on set,” she continued. “You could just tell Reese is his mom. You’re just like, ‘Oh, you’re a good person. I can’t imagine anyone saying a bad thing about you. You’re one of those.'”
