The Red Sea International Film Festival kicked off in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia tonight with what seemed like never-ending red-carpet glamorous fashion from Hollywood, Bollywood, Arab cinema, and the European film world. The evening set the tone for the next ten days of 131 feature films and shorts from 61 countries, in 41 languages- with 34 of these films being world premieres.

Sharon Stone, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Guy Ritchie, Andy Garcia, Michelle Rodriguez, Gurinder Chadha (director of Bend It Like Beckham), Antonio Banderas, Oliver Stone, and Yousra, were some of the actors who graced the red carpet at the Red Sea Corniche, the festival’s outdoor venue where films will be screened throughout the festival. Appearing later in the festival will be Jackie Chan, Spike Lee, Scott Eastwood, Lucy Hale, Julianne Hough and other international actors. The opening night film was Shekhar Kapur’s film, What’s Love Got to Do with It?, starring Lily James and Emma Thompson, written by Jemima Khan, and produced by StudioCanal and Working Title.

Opening the ceremony was an ode to cinema, with a short film explaining this year’s theme: Film Is Everything, while dancers danced. Then Lebanese presenter Raya Abirached co-emceed the opening ceremony paying homage to renowned Indian actor and producer Shah Rukh Khan, iconic British director Guy Ritchie, and Arab cinema legend Yousra.

The Festival CEO Mohammed Al Turki took to the stage, thanking attendees for celebrating the power of cinema. “The RedSeaIFF is now more important than ever, a clear indicator of change and plays a crucial role in transforming and reshaping the future for our next generation of creatives,” he states in notes. “We have a unique opportunity to make new films accessible to wider audiences, showcase the work of exciting new voices and make a meaningful contribution to the Saudi culture and wider region. We are excited to welcome film lovers, storytellers, talent and industry professionals from around the world to Jeddah for our second edition, which I hope will exceed expectations.”

The festival gives a platform to Saudi films, which will be shone alongside international films, including 25 new films from a new wave of Saudi filmmakers.

To close the evening, Bruno Mars took to the stage signing hits from That’s What I Like to Just The Way You Are.
