Staff Spotlight on PA TV Metadata’s Paula Collins

With PA TV Metadata only recently celebrating its first year rebranding from EBS – we get to know the people behind the brand, how they came to be in the role they are in today, and what their experience has been along the way.

In this first of many staff spotlights, we speak to Head of TV Metadata, Paula Collins, who talks more about what her role involves and how she got there, amongst other things.


1. What is your job role at PA TV Metadata, and what does a normal working day entail for you?

My role is Head of TV Metadata at PA TV Metadata and there is no such thing as a normal working day – no two days are the same! My role spans operations, commercial, development, strategy and direction, and I can go from a staff feedback session to a client meeting to discuss a potential new service, a workshop on FAST channels, checking the monthly P&L or prepping for an industry event.

2. How would you describe PA TV Metadata in one sentence?

PA TV Metadata creates and delivers superior metadata to empower audiences’ content discovery using industry leading technology and expertise.

3. What has been your career journey here at PA TV Metadata?

I began my career with Computer Newspapers Services back in 1989. In 1994, the company was bought by the Press Association and really took off, becoming the market leading provider of TV programme metadata it is today. I started out as a part-time Data Processor, progressing to Team Leader, then Operations Manager, Deputy Head of Operations and now Head of PA TV Metadata, a role I have held for the past 12 years.

Computer Newspaper Services, who Paula first began working for, were acquired in 1994 by the Press Association, who would later rebrand as PA Media, and along the way would acquire EBS – before rebranding its full TV listings and TV metadata services as one entity – PA TV Metadata in 2021.

4. What has been the most significant achievement you’ve been part of in your time working at PA TV Metadata?

Having worked at PA for 33 years, there have been many career highlights. However, I would say my most significant achievement was being instrumental in securing the Sky digital service back in 2009, working with their team on the launch, building the relationship and trust and being part of its evolvement over a 10-year period into our biggest and highest-revenue earning service today.

5. What is the biggest change in the media and broadcast industry that you’ve noticed?

There have been many, the broadcast media landscape is constantly changing. However, the biggest change I have seen is the switchover from analogue to digital TV which began in 1998 and over the next 14 years saw the five traditional PSB services increase to the 650 plus linear channels available today.

6. How do you see the industry changing within the next five years?

The swiftly changing market landscape makes it difficult to predict, but we can expect to see a continued rise in streaming services giving consumers more choice – whether it’s to watch live TV, last night’s favourite TV episode, or binge-watch a full season of a past or present show. This freedom of choice is likely to put competitive pressures on the traditional TV providers forcing them to unbundle their services to remain competitive. We can also expect to see more entertainment providers merging as we have already seen with Discovery / Warner Media & Eurosport / BT Sport. There is still much talk of linear TV ending, but the TV channels are fighting back and repositioning themselves for an on-line first future. Predictions also show a rise in FAST (Free Ad Supported TV Streaming Services) channels. What is certain is that linear TV and streaming services will have to co-exist for a few more years, but until when? Watch this space…
