US hits global record after recording more than one million new COVID-19 cases

The United States has hit a new world record after more than one million new COVID-19 cases were detected in the past 24-hour period.

There were 1,688 deaths recorded in the same period.

The surge in COVID cases in the US is being driven by the Omicron variant, which accounts for around 95 per cent of infections.

Health officials have warned the peak could still be weeks away.
